Chat Widget Spam Protection Released
TL;DR
GoHighLevel's Chat Widget now features built-in spam protection that automatically detects and flags suspicious submissions.

TL;DR
GoHighLevel has rolled out spam protection for its Chat Widget. Existing chat widgets need manual configuration, while new ones have it enabled by default.
Who this affects
HighLevel has not confirmed who this specifically affects. Agencies using Chat Widgets are the primary audience. Those who do not use Chat Widgets can safely ignore this update.
What changed
- The Chat Widget now includes built-in spam protection.
- This protection operates automatically in the background without adding CAPTCHA, extra form fields, or additional steps for genuine visitors.
- HighLevel retains suspicious submissions as contacts.
- These suspicious contacts are tagged with
chat_widget_high_volume_flag. - Messaging can be paused for these flagged contacts (SMS, email, or both).
- Spam Protection is configured individually for each Chat Widget.
- There are four available actions for spam protection: Tag Only, Pause SMS, Pause Email, and Pause Both.
- Only the selected communication channels are impacted by spam protection; other channels and existing DND preferences remain unchanged.
- The contact activity log records when messaging is paused by this feature.
- Flagged contacts can be located by filtering for the
chat_widget_high_volume_flagtag. - Spam Protection is OFF by default for Chat Widgets created before this update.
- Spam Protection is ON by default for newly created Chat Widgets, with 'Pause Both' automatically selected.
- HighLevel has not confirmed the rollout status of this feature, nor has it confirmed any limits or plan gating.
Where to find it
The spam protection settings are located within the Chat Widget builder sidebar by navigating to Sites > Chat Widget > [Select Chat Widget].
How agencies will use this
Agencies can leverage this feature to reduce junk contacts and prevent spam from hitting client inboxes. For example, an agency managing lead generation for a client using the Chat Widget can activate 'Pause Both' for new Chat Widgets. When a submission is flagged as suspicious by the system, the contact will be tagged with chat_widget_high_volume_flag, and both SMS and email communication will be automatically paused for them. This prevents automated workflows from engaging with spam. The agency can then use a Smart List or filter to regularly review contacts with the chat_widget_high_volume_flag tag, manually verifying their legitimacy before re-enabling communication or deleting them. This proactive step helps maintain data hygiene and ensures client resources are not wasted on spam interactions.
Our take
This is a standard new feature that addresses a common pain point. It's a minor update but a welcome one, offering practical utility for agencies using Chat Widgets. The fact that it works automatically without adding friction for legitimate users is a plus. Agencies should review existing Chat Widgets and decide whether to enable this feature, particularly selecting the appropriate 'Pause' action based on their client's communication strategies. HighLevel has not confirmed the full rollout status or any impact on existing workflows, so proceed with standard testing.
